Muḥammad b. Yūsuf b. ʿĪsā b. Ṣāliḥ Aṭfayyash (1821–1914), also known by his epithet “pole of the imām s” ( quṭb al-aʾimma ), was one of the most important reformist scholars of Ibāḍī Islam in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The name “Aṭfayyash” derives from the Tamazight (Berber dialect) spoken in the Wādī Mīzāb (an area in the northern Sahara, located 600 kilometres south of the Algerian capital, Algiers); it is formed from the three words aṭṭaf , ayyā , and ash , meaning “take,” “come,” and “eat”; it may thus be a
