Abstract : Abū ʿAbdallāh Aḥmad b. Abī Duʾād b. Jarīr (160–240/776 or 777–854), rose to prominence as an advisor to the caliph al-Maʾmūn and was appointed chief judge by al-Muʿtaṣim, apparently at the behest of his brother's will. In terms of fiqh , he was a Ḥanafī. He was also well known as a Muʿtazilī and as a man of prodigious intellect. He dabbled in poetry and associated with literati such as al-Jāḥiẓ. He sat comfortably near the apex of power as a primary advisor to
