Abstract : Aḥmad Bey b. Muṣṭafā of Tunis (d. 1855) was the tenth ruler of the Ḥusaynid dynasty, which ruled Tunisia from 1705 until 1957; he was known as a reformer and moderniser. He was born in 1221/1806 to a Sardinian slave woman, Francesca Rosso, who had been taken captive by Tunisian corsairs in 1798 from a small island off the Sardinian coast, raised at the Ḥusaynid court, and married to Muṣṭafā Bey, Aḥmad’s father. Indeed Francesca’s son was apparently referred to as “the Sardinian” by members of the
