Abstract : Arghūn b. Abāqā (660–90/1262–91) was the fourth ruler of the Īlkhānid dynasty in Iran. We first learn of him when he is named titular governor of Khurāsān and Māzandarān by his father, Abāqā (r. 663–80/1265–81), and chronicles refer to his sporadic campaigns in Sīstān and western Afghanistan. Appointed as the next Īlkhān by his father, Arghūn's ascent was frustrated when, after his father's death, his uncle, Aḥmad Tegüder, persuaded neighbouring Mongol amīr s to support his candidacy at a qūrīltāy (assembly of
