Arithmetic has three main disciplinary meanings within the history of mathematics in Islamic societies. One reflects ancient Greek number theory and is represented by the transliterated Greek term arithmāṭīqā . The second is close to the common, modern, school usage of the word, i.e., it stands for calculation and its operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and extracting roots. Various terms, depending on the type of operation, indicate this meaning, for example, Indian arithmetic (al-ḥisāb al-hindī) , finger reckoning (ḥisāb al-yad, al-ḥisāb al-rūmī, al-ḥisāb
