Abstract : Asceticism refers first to deliberate austerity as part of a life of devotion. It is a conventional translation of the Arabic zuhd , which usually means renunciation of, or at least unconcern with, the world. This article focuses chiefly on the ascetics (Ar. zuhhād, nussāk) of the second/eighth century, widely regarded as forebears of the Ṣūfīs of the later third/ninth century and after.
