Abstract : Askiyā al-ḥājj Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr Ture (r. 898–935/1493–1529) was the most famous ruler of the Songhay empire, in West Africa. He was born in about 846–7/1443 and was a Soninke (Mande) by his father and perhaps Songhay by his mother. He served the founder of the Songhay empire, Sonni ʿAlī (or Shī ʿAlī, r. 869–98/1464–5–1492) as governor of Hombori province, on Songhay’s southern border, with the title of Tondi-farma (governor of the Bandiagara uplands), and as a
