Mustafa Kemal (Ott. Turk. Muṣṭafā Kemāl) (Atatürk) (1881–1938), the principal founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey, was born in Salonica (present-day Thessaloniki) into a family of modest means and status. At age seven he lost his father, Ali Rıza (ʿAlī Rıḍā) (d. 1888), a former customs officer and minor official in the administration of vakıf s (waqf ), who later became a lumber merchant, and he was raised by his mother, Zübeyde, a deeply religious woman.
