Abstract	:	Athanasius of Balad (d. 18 Rabīʿ II 67/11 November 686) was a West-Syrian (Jacobite) scholar, translator, and, eventually, Patriarch of Antioch. Originally from Balad (Eski Mawṣil), Athanasius studied under Severus of Sēbhōkht (d. 46/666–7) at the Monastery of Qenneshrē on the Euphrates near Antioch, the main West Syrian intellectual centre of the first/seventh century, perhaps at the same time as Jacob of Edessa (d. 89/708). From there he moved to the monastery of Bēt Malkā near Antioch or Mar Malkā/Malkē in the Ṭūr
