Abstract : Badr al-D ī n al-Ḥasan ī (1850–1935) was the son of Yūsuf al-Maghribī, an itinerant ʿ ālim of Moroccan extraction, and of ‘Ā’isha al-Kuzbarī from the foremost family of ḥadith experts in Damascus. He acquired his initial education from his father and, after the latter's death in 1862, continued his studies mainly on his own. After his father’s death Badr al-Dīn was assigned to teach at an early age by his mentor Abū l-Khayr al-Khāṭib, but a spiritual crisis
