Abstract	:	Muḥammad Bakhīt al-Muṭīʿī al-Ḥanafī (d. 1354/1935) was muftī of Egypt from 1914 to 1920. Born on 10 Muḥarram 1271/3 October 1854 in the village of Muṭīʿa, in the province of Asyūṭ, in Upper Egypt, Bakhīt studied at al-Azhar and later taught Ḥanafī fiqh there. In 1880 he was appointed qāḍī in the Sharīʿa courts, first in the Qalyūbiyya province, and after a brief period at the ministry of justice, he was appointed head of the Alexandria Sharīʿa court and then qāḍī of Cairo.
