Ghiyāth al-Dīn Ulugh Khān Balaban (d. 686/1287) was sultan of Delhi and founder of the dynasty that reigned there until 689/1290 and at Lakhnauti, in western Bengal, until the early eighth/fourteenth century. One of the Turkish military slaves (bandagān; ghulāmān) known as Shamsīs, after their master, Sulṭān Shams al-Dīn Iltutmish, and purchased towards the end of his reign, probably in 630/1232–3, Balaban was, at the time of Iltutmish’s death (633/1236), still of junior status, a member of the Turkish guard corps
