Abstract	:	The majority of Banjārās are Hindu nomads. Henry Elliot (1869) was perhaps the first to report on Muslim Banjārās in the region stretching from Hardwar in the state of Uttaranchal through the districts of Muradabad, Rampur, and Bareilly, to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. The Muslim Banjārās, then known as Turkiyā and Mukerī Banjārās, comprised about two-thirds of the Banjārā population in the then United Provinces. They were reported to be quite orthodox in their social and religious conduct and less wandering grain traders than the Hindu Banjārās. Present-day
