Abstract	:	Batriyya (or Butriyya) is a pejorative term applied to one of two groups (the other being the Jārūdiyya, discussed below) considered to be the progenitors of the Zaydī Shīʿa. The name likely originates from polemical accusations that they sever (batr) the legitimate rights of the Family of the Prophet. According to the heresiographical literature, the Batriyya were a moderate Shīʿī group distinguished by the following characteristics: a.
