The bazaar in Arab lands is the name for the variously sized mercantile trading zones distributed throughout urban centres, including their residential neighbourhoods. It is not just the large, densely packed zone near to the heart of an urban centre that is generally defined by a particular architectural unity and layout. Rather, the bazaar is a collection of interconnected, architecturally diverse, extra- and intramural market spaces with fluctuating, porous boundaries, which is integrated with other major institutions of urban Islamic culture.
