Abstract	:	Bedreddin b. Kadı Simavnalı (Badr al-Dīn b. Qāḍī Samāvnālı, 760–819/1359–1416) was an Ottoman scholar, judge, Ṣūfī, and rebel. He was born in Simavna (Samāvnā), near Edirne (present-day Kyprinos in northeastern Greece), as the eldest son of the judge İsrail (Isrāʾīl), an early Ottoman frontier warrior. His mother was a Greek convert named Melek Hatun (Khātun). Because the only source for his family and early life is the hagiography composed by his grandson Halil b. İsmail (Khalīl b. Ismāʿīl), scholars debate his hagiographer’s claims about
