Abstract	:	Benavert is the Latinised spelling used by Norman chroniclers for the name of the leader of the Muslims in the region of Syracuse. He resisted the forces of the Norman conqueror of Sicily, Count Roger (d. 1101 C.E.), from 464/1072 to 479/1086. Amari believes his name to be a corruption of the Arabic Ibn al-Ward. Because no Arabic sources mention him, the only detailed account of him is by the Latin chronicler Geoffrey Malaterra, who wrote Ibn al-Ward’s name “Benavert.” In 467/1075 Count
