Abstract : Developed in pre-Mughal India beginning in the seventh/thirteenth century, Bihārī calligraphy (khaṭṭ-i bihārī) continued to be used in certain manuscripts and in specific contexts up to the nineteenth century. In its early forms—the monumental epigraphy of the late seventh/thirteenth century and the manuscripts of the late eighth/fourteenth century—this calligraphic style showed characteristics intermediate between angular and cursive scripts; later, from the ninth/fifteenth century onwards, it shared some traits with muḥaqqaq (lit., established), one of the six calligraphic styles recorded since the ʿAbbāsid
