Usama Bin Laden (Usāma b. Lādin, 1957–2011) was the founder and leader of the jihadist organisation al-Qāʿida, which perpetrated the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001. 1. Early life Usāma b. Muḥammad b. ʿAwaḍ b. ʿAbbūd b. Lādin was born 10 March 1957 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a son of the construction tycoon Muḥammad b. Lādin (d. 1968), who had immigrated to Saudi Arabia around 1930 from his native Ḥaḍramawt, and his Syrian mother, ʿĀliyya al-Ghānim, who hailed from Latakia (al-Lādhiqiyya). Usāma
