Biʾr Maʿūna was a watering place in the Ḥijāz, four days’ journey from Medina (Illustration 1), where, sometime after the Battle of Uḥud (3/625), Bedouin from the tribes of Sulaym and Kilāb (one of the ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿa tribes) slew an unknown number of the Companions of the prophet Muḥammad. Although Biʾr Maʿūna was in the land of the Sulaym, some claimed that it belonged to the ʿĀmir b.
