Abstract	:	The biography of the prophet Muḥammad was the central theme of the sīrat al-nabī , which was not a single genre but a branch of literature in early Islam that encompassed all of early Islamic history. Both this literature and any work belonging to it were called sīra , or sometimes maghāzī (lit., “military expeditions”). At present, sīra is used for “biography” in the modern sense, that is, the story of the Prophet’s life, often including an analysis of his personality. 1.
