Abstract
:
Habib Bourguiba (al-Ḥabīb Bū Raqība, 1903–2000) was the principal leader of the Tunisian nationalist movement and the first president of the republic. He headed the Neo-Destour Party, which he founded in 1934, became prime minister after independence, in 1956, and, after the abolition of the monarchy in 1957, became the first president of the Republic of Tunisia. He remained in power until he was deposed in 1987. He was an authoritarian reformer, especially known for his vision of secular modernity, which he tried to realise in Tunisia.
