Abstract	:	Mīr Muḥammad Amīn Saʿādat Khān Burhān al-Mulk (1091–1151/1680–1739) was the first nawāb of Awadh, the richest Mughal successor state in northern India. Born in Nīshāpūr, in Khurāsān, to a sayyid family— sayyid s are those that claim descent from the prophet Muḥammad—he moved to India in 1121/1709 with his father, a qāḍī in the Ṣafavid empire, and settled in Patna, in Bihar. He rose to the considerable personal military rank of one thousand in the imperial guard of the emperor Farrukhsiyar (r. 1124–31/
