Abstract : The domestic cat (Arabic qiṭṭ , Classical Arabic sinnawr and hirr , Persian gorbe , Turkish kedi) is not mentioned in the Qurʾān but is often referred to in Tradition (ḥadīth) . The prophet Muḥammad is said to have esteemed cats. Although the tradition that he cut his robe in order to let a cat sleep on it is considered false (al-Qāriʾ al-Harawī, 143), he did promise hellfire to a wife who tortured her cat. Cats are ritually clean animals, which do not contaminate a prayer, but the eating of their flesh
