Abstract	:	In the Islamic lunar calendar, the crescent of the new moon (hilāl) defines many aspects of Muslim religious life, ranging from the date of the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina (ḥajj) , to the beginning and end of Ramaḍān, the month of fasting (ṣawm) . Apart from its calendrical importance, the new moon progressively came to be viewed as one of the distinctive symbol s of Islam .
