Abstract	:	Cumhuriyet , “The Republic,” was the most prominent intellectual Turkish daily newspaper for many decades after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. The writer Yunus Nadi Abalıoğlu (1880–1945), who also owned the newspaper Yeni Gün (“New Day”), founded it on 7 May 1924, and it has been published continually ever since. Cumhuriyet began with a circulation of 7,000 in Istanbul.
