Abstract	:	Serat Dermagandhul was one of three anti-Islamic tracts in Javanese evidently written in East Java in the 1870s in reaction to Islamic reform movements. Islamic reform’s progress among Javanese from about the 1850s produced some resistance. A social group known as the abangan emerged, who attenuated their commitment to Islam and its rituals and came to be regarded as merely nominal Muslims.
