Abstract : The Dewan Dakwah Islamiyah Indonesia (DDII), one of the most prominent daʿwa (Islamic proselytising) organisations in modern Indonesia, was founded in 1967 at a gathering attended by members of the then recently disbanded Masyumi party. Led by Mohammad Natsir (1908–93), Masyumi had campaigned—unsuccessfully—during the first decade and a half of Indonesian independence for Islam to be accorded an expanded role in the formal institutions of the Indonesian state. However the political realities of the New Order Indonesia under Suharto (president 1967–98) forced Masyumi activists to withdraw
