Abstract : The Qurʾān emphasises that food has been made for the benefit of mankind, and it invites one to “eat of the good things (ṭayyibāt) that We have provided for you” (Q 2:172; also 20:81, 16:14, 6:142, 2:168, and 5:87–8). By implication, all foods are considered lawful (ḥalāl) unless specifically prohibited by the Qurʾān or the sunna of the Prophet. Foodstuffs that are impure (khabāʾith) or unclean (najas) are prohibited (ḥarām) (Q 7:157). The Qurʾān explicitly forbids carrion (mayta) , blood, pork, and animals
