Abstract	:	Prince Dipanagara of Yogyakarta (1785–1855) was the chief protagonist in the Java War (1825–30) and was exiled by the Dutch colonial authorities to Sulawesi (Celebes) (1830–55). In modern Indonesia, he is officially recognised as a national hero. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries Java was drawn into the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars (1792–1815).
