Djula (Dyula, Yarse) is a term in many dialects of the Mande language spoken in several West African countries (Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso), which refers to traders, especially those involved in long-distance trade. More specifically, it refers to members of a widespread network of Mande-speaking Muslim traders throughout the West African savanna, which was directly or indirectly responsible for much of the early diffusion of Islam in the West African grasslands.
