Eunuchs , castrated male slaves, were employed in royal palaces, imperial armies, and elite households as early as the tenth century B.C.E., when the Assyrians established their empire in the region that is now Syria and Iraq. They are well attested in the Achaemenid, or ancient Persian, empire (550–330 B.C.E.) and they are mentioned in both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.
