Abstract	:	Euthanasia , rendered in Arabic usually as al-qatl al-raḥīm (merciful killing), means literally the procuring of an easy and painless death. Although euthanasia generally implies ending an individual’s life out of compassion for that person’s suffering, bioethical sources make two significant distinctions. Based on the means employed to carry out euthanasia, it can be active (through deliberate intervention, as by giving lethal drugs) or passive (by allowing a person to die by, e.g., withholding treatment).
