Abstract	:	Fear of God (khawf) and hope (for God’s mercy) (rajāʾ) are two stations (maqāmāt , Ar. sing. maqām) on the Ṣūfī path. In Ṣūfī handbooks, both stations lie somewhere in the middle of the Ṣūfī traveller’s spiritual journey. In the Qūt al-qulūb (“The nourishment of the hearts”) by the Baghdadi Ṣūfī Abū Ṭālib al-Makkī (d. 386/996) and the Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn (“Revival of religious sciences”) by the famous Khurāsānian scholar al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111), these stations follow the stations of patience (ṣabr) and gratefulness (
