The Federation of Arab Republics (F.A.R., Ittiḥād al-Jumhūriyyāt al-ʿArabiyya ) was a projected political confederation of Libya, Egypt, and Syria, initiated by Colonel Muʿammar al-Qadhdhāfī (1942–2011), soon after he came to power in Libya, through a coup d’état, in September 1969. Collaboration was originally envisaged between Libya, Egypt, and Sudan, where Jaʿfar al-Nimayrī (1930–2009) had recently seized power.
