Abstract	:	The phrase “ generation and corruption ” (al-kawn wa-l-fasād) refers both to Aristotle’s work by that name and to the science treated therein. Aristotle’s text was available in several translations in the mediaeval Arabic-speaking world, along with several Greek commentaries, and was itself much discussed in the mediaeval Islamic milieu. The subject of the corresponding science of generation and corruption is the change of one kind of thing into another kind of thing or, more precisely, the change of a substance inasmuch as it is substance.
