Mehmet Şemsettin Günaltay (1301–81/1883–1961), a Modernist Islamist and pan-Turkist Turkish scholar and statesman, was born in Eğin (Kemaliye, vilayet of Mamuretülaziz; Erzincan in present-day Turkey). He was the son of İbrahim (İbrāhīm) Edhem Efendi, a müderris (teacher), and Saliha Hanım (Ṣāliḥa Khānım). He studied science (fen) at the Darülmuallimin-i Aliye (Dār al-Muʿallimīn-i ʿAliyye, Imperial Teachers’ Training College) and graduated in 1323/1905. He also studied Arabic, Persian, and religious sciences with private tutors. After graduation, he served as a high school teacher.
