The region Gondwāna is named after the Gonds, a group of large clans who are its most characteristic—and formerly its most numerous—inhabitants. In Mughal times, it was largely coterminous with the sarkār of Gaŕhā, situated between 78º and 83ºE longitude and 20º and 25ºN latitude. (The Mughal empire was, from the days of Akbar, who reigned 963–1014/1556–1605, divided into ṣūba s, or provinces (twelve initially, more later), themselves divided into sarkār s, or districts).
