Abstract	:	Muḥammad Kāmil Ḥusayn (1901–77) was an Egyptian surgeon, novelist, and writer. He was born in Subk al-Daḥḥāk, a village in the Delta governorate of al-Munūfiyya, to a learned family with peasant roots. After the death of his father—a teacher of Arabic language and friend of the prominent reformer Muḥammad ʿAbduh (d. 1905)—Ḥusayn’s elder brother took care of him and provided him with a secular education in Cairo. He graduated from medical school in 1923, then went on a government sponsored study mission to London
