ʿImād al-Dīn Ismāʿīl b. ʿUmar Ibn Kathīr was born around 701/1301 in the town of Buṣrā, on the outskirts of Damascus, into a family which traced its lineage back to the tribe of Quraysh. His father was a noted preacher (khaṭīb) , famous for his eloquence ( al-Bidāya , 14:31–3).
