Abstract

|
Yūḥannā b. Sarābiyūn (third/ninth century), known in the Latin West as Serapion Senior, was the Christian author of a medical compendium ( kunnāsh ) composed in Syriac in two distinct versions, the smaller of which consisted of seven chapters ( maqālāt ), and the larger, twelve or thirteen. The bio-bibliographer Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿa (d. 668/1269–70; 158) relates that Yūḥannā’s father, who hailed from Bājarmā, in northern Iraq, and his brother Dāwūd b. Sarābiyūn were also physicians. Notwithstanding this testimony, Dāwūd is unlikely to be the younger brother of Yūḥannā
