Suhayl Idrīs (1925–2008), a Lebanese intellectual, novelist, translator, lexicographer, and literary critic, was an innovator of twentieth-century Arab literature and criticism and the founder of the prestigious al-Ādāb literary magazine and publishing house. Born in Beirut into a Muslim family, he attended an Islamic religious school, Jamʿiyyat al-Maqāṣid al-Khayriyya al-Islāmiyya (al-Maqāṣid Charitable Islamic College), and later Kulliyyat Fārūq al-Sharʿiyya (Fārūq College of Islamic Canon Law). In 1940, soon after completing his higher education, he abandoned religious studies and began his journalistic career
