Abstract : “ Impetus ” or “inclination” (mayl) is a technical term in mediaeval Arabic natural philosophy . It primarily refers to the immediate cause of a body’s motion or change, such as a stone’s heaviness, which causes it to move downward if left unsupported. Mediaeval philosophers identified three sorts of impetus: one, natural impetus, like heaviness; two, forced or impressed impetus, like the force that a bow imparts to an arrow; and three, psychological impetus, as in one person’s inclination for another.
