Abstract
:
Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world and the largest Muslim-majority country. It has a total population of 260 million people, some 225 million of whom are Muslim (2016). The archipelago of which Indonesia is part has long been marked by pronounced socio-ecological and ethno-cultural diversity , and this variation has shaped cultural and political developments across the region from premodern times to today. This equatorial nation comprises some 4000 islands stretching 3400 miles from east to west and separating mainland Southeast Asia from Australasia.
