Abstract	:	Shaykh Muṣṭafā Ismāʿīl (1905–78) is remembered for his extraordinary artistry in communicating the meanings of the Qurʾānic text through melody. While he cannot be faulted for his mastery of the Qurʾānic canons—the rules of recitation (tajwīd) and the variant readings (qirāʾāt) —his reciting was criticised for evoking inappropriate responses from his vocal fan base. Recordings of many of his live performances were accepted for the Egyptian Radio archives only after listeners’ responses (often compared to those of football fans) were edited out, or they were refused on the
