Abstract	:	Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī (155–235/772–850), the son of Ibrāhīm al-Mawṣilī (d. 188/804), was an illustrious court musician of the early ʿAbbāsid period, known for his scholarly prowess and his musical expertise. Born in Rayy, he moved to Baghdad with his father, who arranged for him to be educated by the outstanding scholars of the day. He was taught the religious sciences and law, becoming so proficient that, according to the caliph al-Maʾmūn (r. 198–218/813–33), he would have appointed him qāḍī
