Abstract	:	Israel of Kashkar (Isrāʾīl al-Kaskarī, d. 258/872) was a Christian scholar and polemicist in early ʿAbbāsid Iraq. He belonged to the Church of the East (also known as the Nestorian Church) and was catholicos for a short period of time in Kashkar (located between Kūfa and Basra). Supporters of a rival candidate for the position treated him violently, leading to his death soon after. Israel should not be confused with his younger namesake and fellow member of the Church of the East, Israel of Karkh Jiddan (d. 350/
