Abstract : Malik Muḥammad Jāyasī (900–49/1495–1542), who lived in North India, is the most famous Ṣūfī poet of Avadhī and Hindī literature. He lived most of his life at Jais (Jāyas), a Ṣūfī centre in Rae Bareilly district. He refers with veneration to the Chistī shaykh Sayyid Ashraf Jahāngīr Simnānī (d. c.828/1425), and the Afghan king Shīr Shāh Sūr (r. 947–52/1540–5). Illustration 1.
