Abstract : Karlowitz (or Carlowicz, in common western usage; mod. Turk. Karlofça ), is a town, now Sremski Karlovci, in northern Serbia (autonomous province of the Vojvodina), which lies between Novi Sad and Petrovaradin, close to the south bank of the Danube, and approximately 75 kilometres northwest of Belgrade. It has a population (2011) of 8,722. In the later Middle Ages, the small fortress and township formerly known as Karon formed part of the kingdom of Hungary. It came under Ottoman rule in Şaban (Shaʿbān) 927/July 1521, in the course of
