Abstract	:	Sekarmaji Marjan Kartosuwiryo (1905–62) emerged as an Islamist politician in colonial Indonesia, and his vision for an Islamic state later clashed with the established non-confessional republic. His rebellion failed, and Kartosuwiryo was executed as an enemy of the state. Kartosuwiryo was born in Cepu, a small town between East and Central Java, where his father was employed in the Dutch colonial administration. His position allowed his son a privileged European education, at the prestigious Europeesche Lagere School, even though Kartosuwiryo later saw this system as having negative effects
